3 ways to reduce email spam

Have you ever signed up for a newsletter or purchased a product from what appeared to be the best store ever and then mysteriously began receiving junk email? Or maybe you posted a job opening on LinkedIn or other social media networks and included you email address in the job post. If you aren’t careful, you may be setting yourself up to be inundated with spam email. Here are 3 things you can do to minimize the number of spam emails you receive.

1. Use an email alias. If you post information on a public forum, e.g. the Internet, keep your email address private. Create a separate email address such as jobs@yourcompany.com to serve as a central collection box for all job applicants. You can then have the emails going to jobs@yourcompany.com forwarded to your personal mailbox if you’d like, or simply log in to that account and review the applications.

2. Create a “Catch All” email account. A catch all email account is exceptionally useful because it allows you to create email addresses on the fly. For example, if I visit www.someshaddyblog.com and sign up for a newsletter or other promotional email, I would NOT use my real email address. Instead, I’d enter something like someshaddyblog@mycompany.com. This way, if I receive spam email addressed to someshaddyblog@mycompany.com, I know that www.someshaddyblog.com shared my information with others.

3. Use an online spam filtering service. Online spam filtering services do a much better job than the ones on your PC because they stop spam before it enters your network. This reduces the amount of bandwidth taken up by a swell of spam email and reduces the chances of your employees rummaging through their junk mail box and opening an attachment with a virus.
